The study

Our citizen science study will take place in Berlin from April 2025 to March 2026. Here, we present details about the study process, including the basic participation and two additional voluntary modules.

1. Basic participation

All participants observe their everyday mobility in Berlin for a few weeks. During these weeks, you will answer questions about your daily routes and how you feel about them.

The aim is to highlight the diversity of experiences and needs in mobility. The findings can provide important insights, for example, into possible improvements.

The basic participation includes:

  • a kick-off meeting in April 2025
  • five questionnaires about yourself, your health, and mobility
  • two weeks of short surveys on your mobility (3 to 5 minutes a day)
  • another week of short surveys if there is a heatwave
  • a final event in spring 2026

You will receive a compensation of 60 euros for the basic participation.

2. Additional option: fitness watch

If you are interested, you can use an exercise bracelet to measure and document your daily mobility for two weeks each in summer and winter. Short daily surveys accompany this measurement process. We want to use the data to learn more about the potential health benefits of everyday mobility.

Of course, we will lend out the measuring devices free of charge. You can choose between different time periods.

If you take part in this additional option, you will be compensated with an additional 20 euros

3. Research groups

If you are interested in conducting more research, you can join one of our research groups. Together with other participants, you can exchange ideas and contribute your thoughts to the study.

The groups will develop research questions and investigate them with the support of our project team. One result could be, for example, formulating recommendations for policy-makers at the end.

The research topics

We have pre-selected topics to integrate your research successfully into the project. You can choose one of the following research groups:

1.Urban climate: This is about how weather, climate, and air quality affect healthy mobility. It is also essential to ask how people react differently to weather effects, for example, due to physical or other limitations.

2. Healthy mobility for all: This is about equity and disadvantages in Berlin's mobility infrastructure. We are focusing on people with limited mobility or difficult access to mobility services.

3. Engagement and participation: This group examines the potential for effective civic engagement in healthy and just mobility for all. After all, transportation can only be transformed if many people are committed to it and make their needs heard.

Each research group ...

  • meets for three workshops (four hours each)
  • is supported by the AMBER team
  • develops research questions, implements them, and evaluates the collected data
  • can present the results at the final event
